GLR 10 Route info

From down south, all the way up north, this GLR 10 runs straight through the Grands Causses Natural Park. This 326-kilometer long GLR is known for its fast pace regarding its succession between on-road and off-road sections. With a total of 116 kilometers of off-road sections in this route, it’s made for the real Adventurisers!

You start your GLR 10 adventure in Octon. This local village near Lac du Salagou is the gateway to the Pyrenean section of the GLR Network. Instead of heading south, you head up north. Your first few kilometers will cut straight through the Regional Natural Park du Haut-Languedoc.

Like I mentioned before, the on-road sections will be succeeded by off-road sections at a fast tempo. The longest on-road section is a mere 28 kilometers. For the off-road sections, that’s half of that. The route will lead you up north for almost its entire length.

The last 40 kilometers will lead you east to your destination at Montfalgaux, a local town near le Besset. From there you have many options to continue your motorcycle adventure! You find the connecting GLRs in the “connections” segment down below.

REGION THE

GLR 10 Region

With the GLR 10 you Adventurise the departments of Hérault and Aveyron. Besides that, you also explore the Grands Causses Natural Park for almost it’s entire length! Read all about the region down below!

Hérault

Hérault as a region is often compared to an open amphitheater facing the sea. Its geography is known for its diversity in landscapes. From the Mediterranean Sea to the southern foothills of the Massif Central. Due to its location, Hérault enjoys a Mediterranean climate. However, the mountainous region in the north-west has some oceanic influences.

Don’t expect any mountainous climate. With an average of 227m in altitude, Hérault is pretty close to sea level. You find its highest peak at an altitude of 1181 meters at Espinouse.

Hérault originates as one of the first 83 departments created during the French Revolution of 1790. The department has been known for its wine and olive growing industry. Unfortunately due to agricultural diseases and frost, many of the farmers closed business in the mid-twentieth century.

Montpellier is the regional capital, with over a million inhabitants. The region saw a major increase in its population during the second half of the 20th century. Nowadays it is Frances’ 8th largest city.

GLR 10 Region Aveyron Map Overview

Aveyron

Aveyron is named after the River which bears the same name, like many other departments in France. This region is also known as the deepest of deep heartlands (la France profonde). With major metropolitans like Toulouse and Montpellier just a couple of hours away, the region feels nonetheless quietly remote. No major highway or high-speed train cuts through the landscape. Therefore the speeds of travel naturally slow down. You can feel it noticeably!

With many more names referring to the remoteness of the region, I never had the feeling of really being alone. The region feels rural, more like a place where you want to get lost, to find all its hidden secrets. Aveyron is also known to have the most beautiful villages of France, adding to its mysterious nature.

In the north, you find the highest point of Aveyron at the summit of Le Signal de Mailhebiau (1469m). More to the south, the department borders the Massif Central. The landscape gradually changes from the grassy hills in the Aubrac Regional Park to the dry brushes at the Massif Central.

DO THINGS TO

Adventurising isn’t only about getting as fast from A to B! A Region has so much more to offer! That’s why I give you some suggestions about things to do while Adventurising the GLR 10.

Lac du Salagou

This lake lies in a small depression of red sandhills all around. Not only is the lake tempting in summer, but also the formations around the lake are something to visit! The deep dark colored red sand is the perfect background for the white rock sculptures.

Le Canyon de Bozouls

This horseshoe canyon is carved into the landscape by the local river. Later on, people inhabited these steep walls and the local town of Bozouls was born. This impressive dance between architecture and natural landscape is something to behold in the region.
