GLR 19 Route info

The GLR 19 motorcycle adventure route isn’t one of the most exciting routes of the GLR Network, but it serves a very important purpose. It connects the Trans-Pyrenean routes with each other in a more accessible area than Ger de Boutx. In the mountain village of Ger de Boutx, you traverse your way east. A long 65-kilometer on-road section leads you to the little off-road sections of this GLR. You end your GLR 19 adventure on the top of a mountain near Biert. In Biert several connecting GLRs are waiting for you to continue your adventure. Click on the button down below to discover all of them!

REGION THE

GLR 19 Region

The GLR 19 connects several parts of the Pyrenean GLR network in the south of France! You’ll discover the High Pyrenees of Haute Garonne and Ariège. Read all about the region of this GLR down below!

Haute-Garonne

The department of Haute-Garonne is mostly known for its prefecture, Toulouse. Toulouse is the fourth-largest city in France. Besides the metropolitan area, Haute-Garonne has more to offer. Especially the southern part of the department houses some of the highest peaks of the Pyrenees. This southern part, also known as Pyrénées Centrals, is for us as Adventurisers the place to be! Bordering with Spain, these peaks reach a maximum altitude of 3222 meters. It’s from these peaks where you can overlook the entire department. From the Pyrenees in the south, the rest of Haute-Garonne consists of two major plains. The first stretches from the Pyrenees base up to Toulouse and the second one from Toulouse up to the northernmost point of the department. It’s because of the extremities between the Pyrenees and the lower plains, that the climate of Haute-Garonne can be divided into two. The northern part of the department knows a predominantly Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and extremely hot and dry summers. On the contrary, the mountainous part knows an alpine climate with cold, snowy winters and fresh summers. It’s the snow that may cause you troubles when you’re outside the recommended season of the GLR in case. Therefore you need to keep an eye on the weather forecast!

Ariège

Ariège is named after the Ariège River which crosses its landscape. The department is predominantly known for its rural landscape and can be divided into three main areas. The northern part consists of glowing plains and light hills. Agriculture dominates the landscape and you’ll find yourself riding between the corn and grain fields. From the north further down south you find yourself among the foothills of the Pyrenees. These Pre-Pyrenean hills will lure you further into the mountains. The landscape starts to change and the granite mountains start to appear. Especially the highest peaks of the department Pica d’Estats (3142m), Montcalm (3077), and Pic de Sotllo (3072m) are visible from quite a distance. The southern area of the department consists of the high mountains. This is also the most tourist-focus area, as the landscape is dotted with ski-resorts, mountain huts, and holiday accommodations. Although this area knows many trails, most of them are off-limits for motorized traffic. As most of the GLRs in the region are at moderate altitude, I recommend to keep an eye out for the weather forecasts. The north face of the mountains are most of the time the coldest and wettest, and in the Pyrenees, this is no exception. Precipitation is evenly distributed, with April and May as the wettest months. Snow may occur as early as October!
