GLR 2 Route info

Heading for the Camargue region, or are you avoiding the hottest region of France? The GLR 2 answers both yes to those questions! The GLR 2 functions as a connection between the GLR 1 and GLR 3 to reach the Camargue region. On the other hand, it functions as a great alternative to connect the GLR 11 to the GLR 4.

Whatever your motivations are, the GLR 2 will treat you well! From this south- to north-route, you’ll start in Villevieille. From there you ride over a total of 140 kilometers north to the endpoint of the GLR in Barjac. Despite it’s shorter length, it turns out this shorty holds some punches behind its sleeve. Expect rocky roads with dry vegetation on the side. Almost a third of the route is off-road-section, so be prepared to spend a full day on it! After that adventurous day, check out which routes connect to the GLR 2 by clicking the button below!

REGION THE

GLR 2 Region

The GLR 2 Adventure route will traverse the entire department of Gard in the south-east of France. With the bordering departments of the Ardèche and Hérault, it’s the perfect connecting GLR to explore the region.

Gard

Gard is located in the Occitanie region of Southern France. The department is named after the Gardon river. What makes the department worth visiting is its rich history. The Gard region was settled by the Romans back in classical times. During the mid-1800s, the region became a beneficiary of early railway development.

The build of an important railway junction caused an increase in the local economy. Due to the growth in wealth and the arrival of influential people, several luxurious hotels were built. Nowadays Gard is famous for its Pont du Gard, a Roman aqueduct across the Gardon River. Gards préfecture is Nîmes. Known for its well preserved Roman monuments like Maison Carée and the Arena of Nîmes. Its second major city Alès functions as a gateway to Cévennes National Park in the west.

In the south, the department borders the Camargue Natural Park. Due to its geographic setting, Gard holds some records of the highest measured temperatures of France. A fun fact of the region is that Gard is also the home of the source of Perrier. An internationally sold carbonated mineral water. Both the spring and the facility are located near the commune of Vergèze.

DO THINGS TO

Adventurising isn’t only about getting as fast from A to B! A Region has so much more to offer! That’s why I give you some suggestions about things to do while Adventurising the GLR 2.

Pont du Gard

The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct built in the first century AD. It was built to carry water over 50 kilometers to the old city of Nîmes. The Pont du Gard is the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges and therefore added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites.

The Arena of Nîmes

The Arena of Nîmes is an ancient Roman amphitheater. Built the same century as the Pont du Gard, it originates from the time-frame as the Coliseum of Rome. Nowadays the amphitheater holds more than 13.000 spectators and is the site of two annual bullfights and other public events.

Sautadet waterfalls

Besides the historically important sites, Gard also holds several natural places worth visiting. One of those is the Sautadet waterfalls. These river wide waterfalls of the river La Cèze provide a welcoming refreshment during the hot summer days. It’s possible to swim in the 470m long section, but be aware of the dangerous parts!
