Quick GLR 6 overview
GLR 6 Route info
Due to strict environmental laws, your first 20 km will be on-road. After these first few kilometers, the on-road and off-road sections will succeed each other at a regular interval. You start to explore the lower alps as you make your way towards the Gorges du Verdon region.
The vegetation and landscape starts to change the more you progress. From the lush alpine hills, to the dry brushes of the Mediterranean. Eventually, you’ll end your GLR 6 adventure in Gréoux Les-Bains, from where you’re able to continue your motorcycle adventure in many directions.
Be aware of the season when you choose to adventurise the GLR 6! Summers can be hot and winters cold. If you start too early, you have the chance to be blocked by the last remaining snowdrifts.
GLR 6 Region
It’s time to explore the lower Alps with the GLR 6! This adventure route leads you past one of the most beautiful regions of France: The department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. But first the adventurous gorges of Verdon in Var. Don’t wait and read more about the regions to explore with the GLR 6!
Var is located at the foothills of the French Alps, which makes the terrain hilly. Geologically you can divide the department into two regions: the limestone region in the north-west and the quartz-like underground in the south-east. Especially the sharp limestone rocks can be devastating to your motorcycle.
Var has lots to offer if you’re looking for a wooded region with a Mediterranean climate. I would recommend visiting the region in spring or in late summer, as the summers can be quite hot.
First, you find the plateaux, hills, and valleys. Although this area only covers one-third of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, it houses most of the population. It’s here where you find it’s bigger cities like Digne-Les-Bains, Manosque, Sisteron, and Barcelonnette.
Second, you have the Lower Alps and High Alps which cover the remaining area of the region. It’s here where a real Adventuriser comes to life. With peaks exceeding 3000 meters, it’s a special place within Europe.
Alpes-de-Haute-Provence knows several climates due to its mountainous nature. Where in the lower hills and valleys a Mediterranean climate dominates, it switches to an alpine climate in the Lower- and High Alps. This difference is also noticeable in vegetation and road surfaces. From dry Mediterranean brushes to the lush alpine fields, you find it all in this region.
Adventurising isn’t only about getting as fast from A to B! A Region has so much more to offer! That’s why I give you some suggestions about things to do while Adventurising the GLR 6.
This river canyon in the south of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence region is a sight in itself. Although you’re going to explore these gorges with the GLR 6, it never hurts to come off your motorcycle for some canyoning!
Simply the most beautiful overview of the Verdon Gorge region. At this observation platform, you get the full overview of the mighty gorges. I would recommend visiting this place just before sunset!
Clue de Barles
One of the most famous balcony roads in France! The hairpin curves and narrow tunnels make this road appear on the list of the most dangerous roads! Let’s see if it’s good enough for an Adventuriser!
Col du Parpaillon
This is one of the main highlights of the GLR 8! An old military road will lead you up the mountain to a maximum of 2780 meters. Just before reaching the peak, you’ll dive into this 520 meters long cold, dark, and wet tunnel.
