GLR 15 Route info

The GLR 15 guides you during your Trans-Pyrenees motorcycle adventure! From the Atlantic to the Mediterranean or in reverse, isn’t that the dream for every adventure rider? This 232-kilometer long GLR navigates you over the French part of the Pyrenees. You start in Sournia, located in the Pre-Pyrenees. From there, your journey heads west. The off-road sections are fairly centralized to this area, just after 9 kilometers you hit the dirt. For the first 35 kilometers, the off-road percentage is 47%! Thereafter it’s mostly on-road. The route guides you through the Regional Park of the Catalan Pyrenees and the National Wildlife reserve of Orlu. This is the main reason why off-road tracks are forbidden in the region. Up and down the mountain roads you go. You pass Andorra to your left, while you make your way west. Halfway you encounter your last off-road section before the big stretch of 68 km to your destination in Biert. From there you have the opportunity to continue your Trans-Pyrenean adventure or branch off to the Mediterranean part of the GLR Network. For more information on the connections, see the section down below.

REGION THE

GLR 15 Region

The GLR 15 leads you through the eastern part of the French Pyrenees. It crosses the Departments of Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude and Ariège. Read all about this region down below!

Pyrénées-Orientales

The Eastern-Pyrenees, as Pyrénées-Orientales is referred to is the department located in the south of France, enclosed by the Spanish border and Mediterranean sea. The department is also known as Northern-Catalonia and has been in fact part of Spain in recent History. After the French Revolution of 1790, the modern department was created. The geographical landscape consists of three major river valleys which spring from the Pyrenees Mountains. As the Pyrenees gain altitude to the western border of the department, most of the landscape is dominated by the Mediterranean Sea. A Mediterranean climate becomes dominant the more you travel to the east. The rolling hills fade into the plains near the ocean. These plains are the hottest and driest of the department and enjoy an average annual temperature of 16°C. As a matter of fact, the region is known for its abundance of sun even in winter. Although it sounds like an adventure riders paradise, be aware! The mountains are unpredictable and can spoil a nice sunny day quite fast.

GLR 15 Region Aude Map Overview

Aude

Aude, named after the river which crosses the department, is also known as the “Cathar Country”. This name originates from a group of religious dissidents living in the 13th century. This religion was quickly declared heathenish by the Catholic Church. In 1209 the pope declared a crusade against the growing counties of Carcassonne and Toulouse. Especially the city of Carcassonne became a refuge for the now prosecuted Cathars. This rich history is seen all over the department. Nowadays Aude is known for its winemaking and tourism around its rich history. But Aude has so much more to offer! Aude has a variety of landscapes in its natural regions. In the east, you find the lagoons and coastal lakes. More inland you find scrub dominated drylands. To the north and west, the Black Mountain region is densely wooded with oak and beech. In between those regions the rolling hills are shaped to accommodate grain farming. Besides the diversity in natural regions, Aude is also known as one of the windiest departments of France, with 300 to 350 days of wind per year! Although the climate is under the influence of the Mediterranean, autumn is characterized by its short and violent storms. The best time of year would be spring and early summer. The summer can be hot and dry, so it is not advisable to ride during the warmest months.

Ariège

Ariège is named after the Ariège River which crosses its landscape. The department is predominantly known for its rural landscape and can be divided into three main areas. The northern part consists of glowing plains and light hills. Agriculture dominates the landscape and you’ll find yourself riding between the corn and grain fields. From the north further down south you find yourself among the foothills of the Pyrenees. These Pre-Pyrenean hills will lure you further into the mountains. The landscape starts to change and the granite mountains start to appear. Especially the highest peaks of the department Pica d’Estats (3142m), Montcalm (3077), and Pic de Sotllo (3072m) are visible from quite a distance. The southern area of the department consists of the high mountains. This is also the most tourist-focus area, as the landscape is dotted with ski-resorts, mountain huts, and holiday accommodations. Although this area knows many trails, most of them are off-limits for motorized traffic. As most of the GLRs in the region are at moderate altitude, I recommend to keep an eye out for the weather forecasts. The north face of the mountains are most of the time the coldest and wettest, and in the Pyrenees, this is no exception. Precipitation is evenly distributed, with April and May as the wettest months. Snow may occur as early as October!
